Land Management Assistant – 2 positions in Kirkland Lake
About Keepers of the Circle
Keepers of the Circle is an Indigenous Hub operated by the Temiskaming Native Women’s Support Group (TNWSG), a non-profit organization founded in 1997 to promote the economic, cultural, and social equity of Indigenous women, girls, and gender diverse peoples.
About the Role
Keepers of the Circle is looking to recruit a summer student (8 weeks) for the position of a Land Management Assistant. In this role, you will gain hands-on skills and experience with land management through the maintenance of Keepers of the Circle’s two food forests as well as restoring natural ecosystems and infrastructure for one of our office sites to protect the natural environment. This site was previously home to a youth detention centre and we are currently in the process of exploring opportunities to rehabilitate this site and heal the lands.
As a Land Management Assistant, you will assist our team in revitalizing and restoring the 18-acre land by assessing the existing site, building natural infrastructure, and conducting other land management activities to preserve the existing ecosystems and conservation easement. Using an Indigenous approach to land management, you will document activities to create a report that showcases the value and process towards cultural rehabilitation. In this role, you will help with monitoring and maintaining Keepers of the Circle’s two food forests and will be involved with the development of educational curriculum that will be used for training programs. You will also gain the opportunity to collaborate with our Cultural Team to develop on-the-land workshops and activities that will support healing and reconciliation.
This position is in-person and the selected candidate will be working at our Kirkland Lake site but may travel with staff to visit our other sites.
