Land Management Assistant

2 Positions for Kirkland Lake, ON

$17.60 per hour – 35 hours per week

 

Tasks and Responsibilities

 

Keepers of the Circle is looking to recruit a summer student (8-weeks) for the position of a Land Management Assistant. In this role, you will gain hands-on skills and experience with land management through providing support with our food forests, supporting grounds and building maintenance. You will assist our team in revitalizing and restoring the 18-acre land by assessing the existing site, building natural infrastructure, and conducting other land management activities to preserve the existing ecosystems and conservation easement. Some of the tasks and responsibilities that they will take on over the course of their summer role are the following:   

Food Forest Support

·         Assist with structural builds: raised beds, fencing, small sheds, storage areas, etc.

·         Build and assemble outdoor fixtures using wood and other materials.

·         Support land-based learning/program setups (moving materials, equipment, and preparing work areas).

·         Follow direction from the Food Forest Coordinator for tasks and project priorities that require assistance.

Grounds and Building Maintenance

·         Coordinate with the Grounds and Building Maintenance worker to establish a schedule for the maintenance of site grounds.

·         Maintain outdoor green spaces including lawn mowing, trimming, edging, and weed removal.

·         Operate and maintain equipment (lawn mowers, trimmers, hedge cutters and skid steer).

·         Inspect grounds regularly to identify hazards.

·         Remove garbage and debris from outdoor areas, parking lots, and walkways.

·         Perform seasonal ground duties such as watering, planting, raking.

Additional Roles and Responsibilities

·         Keep all maintenance and equipment areas such as garages and sheds clean, organized, and secured.

·         Maintain a positive and professional approach when interacting with staff, community members, or visitors.

·         Collaborate with the Keepers of the Circle Cultural Team to host ceremonies and activities on-the-land that support healing and reconciliation.

Requirements and Qualifications

·         Must be a youth (between the ages of 15 and 30).

·         Must be a Canadian citizen.

·         Experience with on-the-land activities and an understanding of cultural approaches and teachings in relation to the land is a plus.

·         Interested in learning about Indigenous land management and food systems.

·         Experience working within an Indigenous community setting.

·         Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods of time.

·         Strong organization, coordination, and time management skills.
