About Keepers of the Circle

Keepers of the Circle is an Indigenous Hub operated by the Temiskaming Native Women’s Support Group (TNWSG), a non-profit organization founded in 1997 to promote the economic, cultural, and social equity of Indigenous women, girls, and gender diverse peoples.

 

About the Role

The Indigenous Housing Worker (IHW) provides housing support to Indigenous Peoples experiencing or at-risk of homelessness in the District of Temiskaming. You will be responsible for assisting local community members to address housing challenges and prevent homelessness in the district.

 

In this position, the IHW will work closely with the Keepers of the Circle support staff, to provide navigation services for families and individuals. Assisting with access to basic needs, assistance programs and specialty funds, connecting with housing stability resources (including external support organizations, Keepers of the Circle Indigenous-focused services in healthcare, family support, training and employment). This position will integrate cultural approaches and views so that Indigenous members receive support and services in a culturally appropriate way. The selected candidate will collect frontline data to help Keepers of the Circle develop Indigenous informed housing and homelessness prevention programs and services.

 

This position functions within a team construct that is inclusive of all community members. Relationships will be guided by the Wisdom Keepers Elders Council, the seven grandfather teachings and the medicine wheel. Confidentiality and a high degree of integrity, discretion, professionalism is essential to this position due to the exposure to confidential and/or sensitive information.

 

Roles and responsibilities include:

·         Mitigate ongoing housing support requests which may include financial supports, ongoing negotiations, acquisition of accommodations, advocacy, in-home assessments, utility supports, rental and billing arrears, moving support, home security, etc.

·         Monitor and review working budget of eligible program expenses

·         Liaise between tenants and landlords to mediate eviction prevention and sustainable living

·         Complete other duties as assigned by the Programs Manager or Executive Director

 

 

 

Requirements:  

·         Must hold a valid G driver's license.

·         Strong knowledge of Landlord Tenant Board (LTB) functions

·         Trauma-informed training; considered an asset

·         Social Service or Mental Health/Addictions worker experience; considered an asset

·         Experience working with Indigenous families in an advocacy, support, or social development role

·         Strong ability to work under pressure and efficient with time management

·         Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with extreme discretion is required

·         Efficient in Microsoft 365 applications (Excel, Word, Sharepoint, Teams, etc)

·         Experience in working budget and forecast planning

·         Non-judgemental and inclusive with strong interpersonal skills

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills and is comfortable presenting in front of a group

·         Ability to apply critical thinking to help facilitate group discussions among members

·         Flexible with program delivery and approach to family's needs

·         Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff and partnering community service agencies.
