Seasonal • Kirkland Lake Region

The Kirkland Lake Curling Club (KLCC) is looking to hire an Ice Technician

for the 2025 -2026 Curling Season

Dates of Employment – Monday September 22, 2025 to mid-April 2026.

The 2025- 2026 KLCC Season will be approximately 29 weeks.

Terms of Employment (Agreement of Responsibilities)

The Ice Tech will be expected to follow the direction of the Ice Chairperson and/ or any other member of the Executive.

The position of Ice Tech has a physical component. The Ice Tech will be expected to shovel snow, by hand, lift the curling rocks, lift 30-pound propane tanks, move the ice scraping machine, move the ice burning machine and move the flooding hoses, all of which can be heavy and awkward to move at times.

The Ice Tech will be expected to perform the duties listed below and must also be willing to take on other tasks that the KLCC Executive requires to be completed, as things arise at the club.

·         The Ice Tech will install the ice before the season begins. This includes sweeping the beds, soaking the beds, spraying the surface, flooding the surface, whitewashing the surface, painting the rings and getting everything ready for the season, including vacuuming and getting the rocks down.

·         The Ice Tech will be responsible for carrying the flooding hoses upstairs, getting the hoses set up and flooding the ice surface, both at the beginning of the year and patch flooding specific sheets of ice or portions of sheets as required.

·         The Ice Tech will help get the curling club building ready for the curling season, including some cleaning, setting up tables, chairs, and equipment.

·         The Ice Tech will be available to open the club for rentals, deliveries or maintenance personnel as required by the KLCC Executive.

·         Once the ice installation is complete, the Ice Tech will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the ice surface. This includes, but is not limited to, scraping (hand and using the electric scraper), burning with the propane ice burning machine, cleaning the sheets of ice after each curling draw (game), pebbling the ice, lifting the rocks up to clean and returning them to the ice surface.

·         The Ice Tech will be expected to do some cleaning of the building. This will include, but not be limited to, vacuuming carpets around the ice surface, in the walkways and the stairways. Other cleaning may be required, as necessary.

·         The Ice Tech will be expected to shovel the entrance to the building, the driveway (including the plow bank) and all exit doors and stairs after each snow fall.   All snow must be cleared a minimum of 1.5 hours before curlers are expected to be on the ice for their game or practice and before any rental of the club.

·         The Ice Tech will shut down the ice making plant, put the rocks and all equipment away at the end of the curling season.

The KLCC Executive encourages the Ice Tech to attend training courses in ice making and maintenance. There are several Level 1 and 2 Ice Technician courses offered in both Northern and Southern Ontario clubs. The KLCC would like to see the Ice Tech become qualified over time and will reimburse course, lodging and travel costs to attend courses.

Some assistance in performing these tasks may be provided at the discretion of the KLCC Executive.

Terms of Compensation

·         The Ice Tech will be compensated at a rate of $20 per hour for any hours worked at the KLCC, regardless of what type of work is being done.

·         The Ice Tech will be expected to work odd hours. Some work may be in the evenings or on the weekends. Some days may require many hours of work, while others may require less time. The Ice Tech must be willing to work these hours to ensure that the curling club functions properly and all ice maintenance is completed in a timely manner.

·         There is expected to be approximately 20 – 25 hours of work per week, but this may vary (more or less time) depending on the time of year and the activity at the club. The KLCC will compensate the Ice Tech for any hours that they are asked to be present.
